Individual Tuition: The Heart of Yoga

 

Individual tuition is aimed at developing your own practice, personally designed to meet your needs and lifestyle. This was how Yoga was traditionally taught. If you really want to develop your Yoga, and make it really effective in supporting your life, or you want a Yoga routine to help with a specific need or problem, then this is for you.

 

 

 

The Viniyoga of Yoga

If people have heard of the word viniyoga, they often associate it with a particular style of a Yoga - a vini-kind-of-Yoga. This is a misunderstanding. In reality viniyoga is a very ordinary sanskrit word  not specifically connected with Yoga at all. It actually means application and can be used to describe the way anything is applied in practice. Thus the viniyoga of Yoga is how the techniques and ideas of Yoga are applied to an individual, respecting all aspects of their personal circumstances. These would include such factors as their age, health, physical abilities, occupation, lifestyle, culture, religion, and what they might be looking for from Yoga. personally designed to meet your needs and lifestyle. Individual tuition is all about the viniyoga of Yoga for that particular person.


 

Individual Tuition: What's involved

 

Through regular meetings we will work with you to design a practice that you can use on a daily basis at home. The contents of this routine may vary greatly between different clients, depending on their needs, interests, abilities and lifestyle. Typically it will include a number of yoga exercises (asana) and some breathing exercises (pranayama). It may also include elements of relaxation, meditation, and personal reflection, depending on the client’s interest.

 

On the first session we will typically take a case history and ask you to do some simple movements so that we can assess how your body moves. We will then propose a simple routine and guide you through it, addressing any issues or questions as they arise. We will write out the practice for you using simple “stick-man” diagrams and give you a copy to take away. You are now in a position to do the practice regularly at home.

 

In designing the practice we will take into account many factors, such as your age, physical abilities, lifestyle, culture, time available etc. Typically we propose practices of between 15 – 45 minutes, but this can vary, and it is better to do something manageable regularly, than to attempt something that it is a struggle to fit into your routine.

 

On subsequent meetings we will check out how you have got on, answer questions and work with you to develop the practice. On some occasions we may just check your practice, on others we may change it significantly.

 


What you can expect

We are committed to working with you to get what you are looking for from Yoga, in as must as it is practical and achievable. We will take care to propose something that is relevant, appropriate and of interest within the constraints you present us with. Our approach is client centered in the sense that we will be guided by you and have no wish to impose any practice or beliefs that do not seem right for you.

The content of our meetings is confidential and you are free to discuss any issues. Some details of our sessions may be made available within a supervision group (we operate a policy of peer supervision for our work), but we will keep personal details to a minimum and this will be confidential within the supervision group. Please say if you would prefer your sessions not to be available for supervision.

If in the unlikely event we have to cancel or re-arrange your session, we will give you as much notice as possible and either refund any fees paid for the session or re-arrange it at your convenience.

Every care is taken to ensure that practice is  safe and appropriate for you, but please note that we are not medically trained and thus if you have any doubts about your health or your suitability for practicing Yoga, we recommend that you seek professional medical advice prior to beginning practice.

What we expect from you

For our work together to be fruitful, it is important that you are as open and honest as possible in discussing what you are looking for and how the practice is working for you. We will be relying on you to give us appropriate feedback on our sessions and the practices, and to inform us if there appears to be any adverse reactions, or your health situation changes in any significant way.

 

We expect you to practice at home regularly and to discuss any issues around practicing. We do not expect you to be perfect, however, and are realists as to what is achievable and how life can present its challenges. We are practitioners too and so we know how it is! However for Yoga to make a difference it needs to be practiced with some regularity, so we expect you to practice.

 

In order to practice effectively it is worth considering when and where you will practice, and how long you have available. We will discuss this with you, but it is worth considering before you come.

 

We know that for some people attending regularly, practice outside the sessions is difficult and they come mainly for the experience during the session. If this is the case please make sure that we are both clear about this so that we can focus our sessions together accordingly.

   

 

Individual Tuition Packages

 

A number of packages are offered to suit different needs, with a corresponding scale of charges depending on the frequency of appointments. Where possible consider that you are taking a regular slot for the duration of the package. This will help you in terms of motivation, commitment and the consequent benefit that you are likely to obtain. This also helps us in planning our appointments and booking venues. We cannot stress strongly enough that the individual tuition is most effective and rewarding when there is a strong commitment to practicing and meeting regularly.

 

Personal Training Package

(3 months: 12 sessions)

Weekly meetings. These will include sessions where the practice is developed, and others where we will just check out your practice and help you to develop your technique.

Suitable for those who want to learn and develop quickly and feel they need the weekly input to keep them motivated.

New to Yoga

           / Therapy Package

(3 months: 6 sessions)

Meetings at approximately two week intervals. These will include sessions where the practice is developed, and others where we will just check out your practice and help you to develop your technique.

Suitable for those new to Yoga or new to personal practice. Experience has proved that the regularity of meetings really helps to establish a new routine of practice. This is also the most appropriate package for those coming with a specific need or problem as this allows us to monitor progress effectively.

Developmental

       / Maintenance Package

(6 months: 6 sessions)

Meetings at approximately one month intervals. This will focus on developing a practice particularly where this is already established.

Suitable for experienced students or teachers who wish to develop and refine their practice.

Bespoke

One-off meetings arranged to suit.

This is generally discouraged, but is possible in specific circumstances.

Committing to a Package

In the majority of circumstances we would suggest a free half-hour initial consultation so that you may discuss your needs, ask questions and decide whether you wish to proceed. There is obviously no charge for this. In rare circumstances we may also suggest that you may be best suited elsewhere if we feel we do not have something of interest to offer you.

 

Assuming you wanted to proceed, we would discuss which of the packages would be most appropriate and set times and provisional dates. At some venues we are not always available every week so the frequency of meeting may have to be adjusted. There is limited flexibility around times and dates as we are encouraging you to commit to a regular slot, although the odd prior appointment or holiday can sometimes be accommodated. We would also ask you to pay for the first meeting at this point. You would then pay again every time we meet so that you are effectively an appointment in hand. Obviously there is nothing to pay on the last meeting.

Completing a Package, finishing early and cancellation conditions

When you complete a package, it is time to review and  there is the possibility of committing to a new package. It is entirely possible to change package at this point, for example to transfer from the New to Yoga package to the Developmental package, or vice versa (some people find meeting more regularly suits them better). Alternatively you may feel that you have learnt enough, or wish to have a break.

 

If you wish to terminate an existing package we would ask you to give at least one meeting notice and pay for the final meeting. We would also encourage you to attend that final meeting for review and completion.

 

If you cannot make an appointment for any reason you are still obliged to pay for it once the dates have been agreed at the initial meeting, although with a minimum of 48 hours notice we will allow one cancellation per package period at no charge. For one-off meetings we require 7 days notice for re-arrangement of the appointment. Refunds are not normally given in any circumstances. Please make sure you are entirely happy with these conditions before booking.


Individual Tuition Costs

Basic package costs are given below. For teachers, student teachers or students who wish to book longer sessions to include study, supervision etc, costs are negotiable based on the rates below, with special rates for student teachers. The rates below are also negotiable in cases of genuine financial difficulty.
