What is Mantra and Vedic Chant?

They are oral and meditative practices integrating the body, voice, mind and emotions in the quest for unity with the source from which sound arises.

It is traditionally called adhyayanam and is the art of listening and learning to recite at different levels with attention and care and a deep involvement of head, heart and body in the outcome.

The benefits include refining the ability to learn to listen, enhancing attention, memory, patience and confidence around the use of our voice and mind. The practice of chanting is also generally uplifting and energising.

Arising out of Mantra and Vedic chant is the possibility of inner silence, both during the practice itself because of the degree of involvement required, and in the stillness afterwards

Traditionally Vedic chanting was taught individually and this is still the most effective way to learn. Today it is common to run small group workshops and courses, and chanting in a group can have a special quality. At Living Yoga we offer both opportunities for chanting in a group and individual work.

Sanskrit

The power of sound has been recognised and used by all the major spiritual traditions. Vedic chant is sacred sound from India, expressed using the ancient Sanskrit language. Most people agree that chanting Sanskrit has a special quality. Through learning Vedic chanting one has the privilege to also learn how to pronounce and appreciate this ancient sacred language.

Some people can be put off by imagining they have to learn Sanskrit as a language in order to practice Vedic chanting effectively. This is not the case. Learning to pronounce the sounds correctly is introduced gradually and it is far more important  initially just to enjoy and experience the power of the chanting. Vedic chanting is a precise discipline that can be refined over many years, but it is mistake to lose the heart of the practice for the sake of pedantry.
